Fuel wise

Dear MCM... First of all, let me say what a good read your publication is, there really isn’t any need to shell out for the numerous glossy monthlies.

Having just read your recent report on the Honda NC700X, I am fascinated by the mpg claims. I don’t dispute them but would point out that there are other bikes out there that can get close like my DL650 Suzuki V-Strom K5 (the old shape model). I have owned it from new and calculate the mpg on every refuel. I regularly get 60-65mpg even when used spiritedly. I don’t regularly break speed limits but do use its urge to get to them as quickly as possible. I once got 66mpg with my wife as pillion and luggage. The bike has a 22 litre tank so a range of over 250 miles is easily attainable and 300 would be possible with a little care. I keep promising myself that I will take it easy on a whole tank to see what it really is capable of, but always end up having a blast at some stage and ruining its max mpg potential.

What do you think of the new breed of cheaper, more economical bikes? (e.g. Honda's CB500)

Great - we need more affordable everyday bikes
I don't ride a bike to care about mpg
I prefer a bike with more power and kerb appeal
Would like to see all manufacturers with bigger capacity machines under £5k
There should be more development going into much higher mpg machines - 200mpg+ please!
