I read with interest your article on an e-petition for awareness of 2 wheel users by 4 wheel drivers. Having passed my bike test 45 years ago and recently passing my advanced bike test 3 years ago I strongly believe it should be the other way around.
Most accidents are very predictable with the proper awareness training. You must never ever assume that you have right of way and that a driver has seen you. In the classic T- bone incidents you must ensure eye contact and watch the front wheels for any slight movement. If you are in any doubt slow down for predictable hazards. Most drivers these days are absorbed with their in-car entertainment and mobile phones. Many more are using foreign licences possibly with no insurance.
We must increase awareness of bikers and treat other road users as complete idiots and never assume that they have seen you.
I truly believe that more bikers (especially born again) should enrol for the advanced bike test that could save their lives by predicting problems ahead.
I have recently stopped wasting my money on buying MCN and now enjoy your monthly paper.
Would it be possible to start showing safe riding techniques in your paper?
I am sure that The Institute of Advanced Motoring would be more than pleased to provide information. When you pass your advanced test we have regular ride outs and social events in your area, sometimes with rides abroad. For just over £100 pounds you get intensive one to one training until we believe you are ready to pass your test. The examiner is usually a highly trained Police rider with many years of experience.
Safe riding.
