Think tank

Dear MCM,
I’m 53 years young and have been riding bikes of all shapes and sizes since I was 16 years old.
Your feature on the latest VFR1200F in the June issue was very good but it does have one error, about distance between fill-ups as rated against other VFRs. I have two: one is a VFR750FJ 1988 model and it will exceed 200 miles on a tank of juice, and the other is a VFR800W 1999 model that will also manage just past 200 miles on a fill-up. So, I’m like many others that say the tank is far too small on the new VFR1200. It should have been at least 25 litres in size.

Hi Phil. My point with the VFR was simply that it has the same size tank as every other VFR, and in my experience (I’ve owned or road tested every version of the VFR built since 1986) and my riding style I always get 160 miles to a tank when I ride them. So, I’d suggest that if you get 200 miles from yours then you’re probably a smoother and more restrained rider than me. Chances are you’ll get 200 miles from a VFR1200 too. On long motorway runs at a steady 85mph-ish I’ve been getting 50mpg from my 1200 which is a theoretical range of just over 200 miles. And it is a phenomenal (if perhaps a little too heavy) bike.
